DIY: Make your own Soda Ash cheaply

So if both your pH and alkalinity need a boost, baking soda is your one-stop-shop. Soda ash or Sal’s soda is a caustic acid used as a cleanser or cleaner in the winemaking process. It removes stains from glass jars, carboys, bottles, barrels, hoses, etc. It is a very slippery and corrosive substance which needs to be neutralized with citric acid after use. Michael has over 25 years of experience in the swimming pool industry. He has built pools and natural landscapes for hundreds of homes and businesses across the country.

Effective January 1, 2022, ANSAC will implement a natural gas surcharge on all shipments of soda ash to our customers... Soda Ash is an essential, but invisible, ingredient in many products which we all use every day. This 50 LB Bag Soda Ash is brand new in the original factory packaging.

Baking soda is very similar to soda ash and can be used for the same purpose, but it will have slightly different outcomes and side effects. It’s helpful to consider the pros and cons of using each product before deciding on one for your pool. This flexibility allows it to be used in a variety of everyday products.

In other words, soda ash will raise the pH of pool water to make it less acidic. Pool owners have been using soda ash – and similar pH balancing products – to manage the chemical composition of their pools for safe, clean water for many years. It’s important to keep in mind that the best pH range you can have for your pool is between 7.4 and 7.6, while the total alkalinity should be around 80 to 120 ppm. A pH of over 7.6 is too basic and anything under 7.4 is too acidic, which is one thing that soda ash is very effective at resolving.

Generally speaking, for every six ounces of soda ash added to a 10,000-gallon pool, the pH level will increase by 0.2 while the alkalinity will rise by about 5 ppm. Use these measurements to determine how much soda ash you need to bring your pool’s pH levels to between 7.4 and 7.6 based on the water volume. Keep in mind that clouding is likely to occur if you add over 16 ounces of soda ash per 10,000 gallons of water. Before you begin, you should also test the chemistry in your pool water to figure out exactly how much the pH levels and alkalinity need to be adjusted. You can accomplish this with test strips or, for greater accuracy, a liquid or digital testing kit. These are often more expensive but will give you the pH and alkaline levels to the decimal point, which will allow you to be much more precise with the amount of soda ash you add.

You can fine-tune what you need, just experiment and test thoroughy until you have learned what amount works best for you. Also, just cause you mixed up a cup of soda ash and water doesn't mean you have to pour it all into your barrel. Pour in a little bit, let it mix into the saltwater, and measure alkalinity or pH. Add a little bit more, mix and test until you hit the desired level. Sodium bicarbonate will raise alkalinity while depressing pH, while Sodium carbonate will raise both. By baking the baking soda in your oven, the heat will drive off the trapped CO2 in the powder that would decrease pH levels and turn it into sodium carbonate.

You’ll need to read the soda ash product packaging carefully to determine the correct dosage required to achieve the pH balance you need for the size of the pool you have. Add the correct amount of soda ash to the water bucket and mix thoroughly. It’s essential to ensure that the soda ash is completely dissolved before it’s added to the pool. Experienced home winemakers know that the work involves a lot of scrubbing and scouring of equipment and storage vessels! This sanitation process is vital to the fermentation process, because wine can spoil when strains of yeast or other bacteria are allowed to grow in your vessel. The two-step cleaning process using soda ash and citric acid helps ensure that your wine doesn’t spoil during the fermentation process.

Maintaining the delicate pH balance of your swimming pool can be challenging and usually requires a highly specific mix of chemicals for sustained clean water. If testing the water chemistry of your pool reveals too much acidity for safe swimming, soda ash – also known as sodium carbonate – may be an excellent solution to restoring a healthy balance. If your pH or Total Alkalinity levels are off in your pool's water chemistry, our Soda Ash is a quick, safe, and effective way to correct both. Made of 100% sodium carbonate, this is the easiest way to balance your chemicals and make your pool a safer, cleaner environment. This powerful formula is the most concentrated pH and Total Alkalinity increaser you can find.

Importantly, it is also used in the manufacture of Lithium Carbonate, used in Lithium Ion batteries, used extensively in electric powered cars and other mobile devices. Soda Ash is used in thousands of products we all use every day. Preheat your oven to 300°F, and wait for the oven light to turn off. Once the timer chimes, remove the pan and allow it to cool off. Once the light turns off, the oven is at the proper temperature. Don't put the tray in the oven until the temperature has been reached first, so you don't burn the product while the oven is heating up. Soda Ash is used in the mining and smelting of various metals, especially alumina products.

Soda ash itself has a pH level of between 11.3 and 11.7, making it a powerful combatant for low pH levels. Unfortunately, cloudiness is one of the main side effects of using soda ash to balance the pH pool, but it should only happen if the soda ash was added incorrectly or if the alkalinity reaches over 120 ppm. If the cloudiness is due to high alkaline levels, you can use muriatic acid to lower alkalinity.

From office building windows to detergents, food manufacturing to internet cables, some common examples are listed below. Measure 4 tablespoons or 1/4 cup of Soda Ash and dissolve in 1 gallon of HOT water. Brush this solution on all your equipment such as a press and crusher to remove stains and mold. It also removes the “stickiness” from fermentation tubs and stainless steel tanks. Soda ash is alkaline or a base and a very powerful cleaning agent.
